The Severed Stars
Technology
Jump drives, kinetic weapons, and the coveted relics of a fallen age.
Technology — overview
Bullets against energy screens. Humanity is the galaxy's kinetic underdog — and that's exactly the point.
Kinetic underdogs
Earth shows up to a galactic war fighting with bullets — railguns, missiles, nuclear-tipped ordnance, heavy armor. The rest of the galaxy abandoned kinetics centuries ago for energy weapons, plasma, and deflection screens, and stopped armoring against solid mass entirely. Those screens are superb against energy and very nearly useless against a tungsten dart moving extremely fast.
Humans are out-ranged, out-accelerated, and out-gunned in every fair fight — so they don't fight fair. They ambush, improvise, salvage, and refuse to quit. The catch: the enemy adapts, so every edge has a shelf life, and every lesson is paid for in blood.
Pretech and jump drives
The galaxy's wonders are mostly inherited. Pretech — surviving Celestar technology like compact reactors, matter synthesizers, and station-scale intelligences — is rare, coveted, and barely understood even by the powers that hoard it. Faster-than-light travel runs on jump drives: roughly a week sealed inside a "jump bubble" to cross between stars, regardless of the distance. The instantaneous gate network that once tied the galaxy together fell long ago.
Psionics
Across the Far Side, psionics is real — a power of alien minds. Humans, uniquely, have none of it whatsoever. Why that should be, and what it has to do with the Celestar, is a question even the galaxy has forgotten the answer to.
