The Severed Stars

Species

The peoples who share the frontier of the Reach.

Species — overview

The peoples of the Far Side — vanished precursors, ruling powers, and the scattered humans the galaxy calls property.

The Far Side is crowded with peoples, most of them human-form thanks to the Celestar's ancient seedings. A few that matter from the very first book:

The Celestar

The vanished precursors. Effectively gone — but their fallen empire is everywhere, in the ruins, the gates, and the pretech every surviving power fights to control.

The seeded humans

Scattered descendants of Celestar seedings, found on world after world. After ten thousand years of conquest, most are exactly what the galaxy assumes a human to be: a low-tech, enslaved underclass. The Solenni, the farming people of the expedition's foothold world, are the first the Earthers meet — and the first to learn that humans don't have to be property.

The Vresh

The regional slaver power whose territory the foothold sits inside. Grounded and mid-tier by galactic standards, but more than a match for a few hundred stranded newcomers — and very much an incumbent watching outsiders annex their holdings. Humanity's first real antagonist.

The Zerai

Green-skinned frontier humanoids: the kind of everyday alien a newcomer actually runs into out on the edges.

And beyond these, older and greater powers loom — empires and ancients who have ruled for ages and see no reason to take a handful of newcomers seriously. Yet.

(Each people can be expanded into its own entry under the Species area.)
